Dear fiber friends,

Increasingly, I’ve realized that I’m unable to separate my political self from my public persona. I believe, with all of my heart, that the personal is political. In many ways, this declaration is a scary one for me. I don’t want to offend or alienate any of my customers. However, if you’ve met me, you know that I’ve never actually been neutral on issues of social justice or human rights. Even in my attempts to position myself as an apolitical yarn dyer, my beliefs have always been a part of my art form. As the business has grown, so have the stakes. Now, when I use Neighborhood Fiber Co. to raise funds for a cause, such as the Baltimore Community Foundation’sFund for Rebuilding Baltimore, that decision impacts all of the people affiliated with and employed by NFC.

So, with the support of the entire NFC team, below are a few of the ways that Neighborhood Fiber Co. is trying to make a real difference in the world. I am aware that these initiatives will not make everyone comfortable and will make quite a few people downright uncomfortable. But we do not live in a world where I can sit by and do nothing. At a time when the world’s moral compass seems to be spinning out of control, we are taking a stand. A stand against violence and tyranny. A stand in favor of justice for all people and unity in the face of oppression. It’s time for all of us to do something.

In peace,
Karida
